Wie vandaag de dag 'Israël' zegt, roept twee werkelijkheden tegelijkertijd op: die van het bijbelse Israël, maar ook die van de hedendaagse staat, zoals die via de media aan ons gepresenteerd wordt: een staat die nog steeds niet erkend is door alle omringende staten en die in een destructief en tegelijkertijd existentieel conflict verwikkeld is met de oorspronkelijke Palestijnse bevolking.
De stichting van de staat Israël in 1948 was enerzijds de vervulling van de Zionistische droom en anderzijds een gevolg van de Sjoa. Historisch besef is nodig om ook theologisch te kunnen reflecteren op de stichting van de staat.
Aan Joodse zijde bestaat een veelheid aan meningen en posities rond het thema 'staat Israël'. Ook in kerkelijk Nederland is daaromtrent een polarisatie gaande. Vooral door het bouwen van de veiligheidsbarrière op Palestijns gebied en de laatste oorlog tegen Hezbolla in Libanon wordt de ethische dimensie van Israëls optreden steeds meer ter discussie gesteld. En toch belijdt onze Kerkorde dat de kerk is "geroepen gestalte te geven aan haar onopgeefbare verbondenheid met het volk Israël".

Recording Losses and Damage caused by the Wall

On the ground - March 2007 Construction of the Wall is proceeding at a rapid pace in Bethlehem district. Palestinians of the towns of Bethlehem and Beit Jala and Palestinian refugees of the nearby village of al-Walaja are about to lose access to all of their open land located in a semi-circle to the West of their densely populated communities.

At the United Nations Meanwhile, establishment of the UN Register of Damages caused by the Wall, including mandate, structure and budget, was endorsed by the UN General Assembly in December 2006 (see document section). No other practical steps have yet been taken, however, by the UN to register the losses and damages incurred to Palestinians. Palestinian and international NGOs remain concerned about the lack of transparency of the process, including nomination of the Register's three-member Board. A Technical Working Group of NGOs, including BADIL, meets regularly, monitors progress, lobbies the UN for speedy and professional implementation of UN Register in according with the standards set by the 2004 ICJ advisory opinion, and offers its expertise to Palestinian popular committees and official bodies whose role will be essential for successful documentation of Palestinian losses and damages by the United Nations.
